Which is Better - French Service or Buffet-Style For Meal Service During Events?

For caterers, party rental companies, and venues like hotels, hosting successful parties many days of the week is just your job. You know what to do, and how to do it well.

But when it comes to making recommendations to prospective clients, what do you offer? Do you have a versatile selection of banquet tables and chairs for different occasions? Are you flexible when it comes to staffing? What sort of licenses do you hold? And what kind of meal services can you accommodate?

For fancier fare, French service (shown above) for a plated dinner is a great way to elevate an event. However, you need to make sure that you have well-trained staff who know exactly how to set up banquet tables with the correct stem and glassware, how to properly pass meals for elegant execution, and how to keep your seated guests happy during the meal.

If that’s a bit out of budget for your client, or the event you’re throwing is not quite as fancy as a wedding, then buffet-style (shown at right) is a great, lower-cost alternative that allows guests to serve themselves. Plus, buffets generally mean there’s no prearranged seat assignments, so people can float from group to group if they so desire.

Depending on which type of meal service your client selects for their event, there are certain banquet tables and banquet chairs that lend themselves to comfort, convenience, and ease for both guests and servers.

The Best Banquet Tables For Events

French service means that an entire table gets served their meals at once. There are going to be some pre-set items like rolls, filled water glasses, etc., but for the most part, individual tables are treated as separate entities during the meal portion of the event.

For this style of service, round wooden banquet tables are best. They allow the most amount of banquet chairs around them and make it easy for a fleet of servers to encircle the table and serve everyone simultaneously. 60” rounds are industry favorites, but these round banquet tables come in sizes between 38” and 72” for whatever your venue space and storage can accommodate.

When it comes to buffets, rectangular wooden banquet tables or rectangular plastic folding tables are recommended. Basically, the shape is the most important element for this style of meal service. You want to maximize the volume of food being presented as well as allow guests to flow easily on both sides of the buffet to keep the line moving. 8’ x 30” wooden banquet tables are best for most buffet-style events, but again, they come in many different sizes for whatever your needs are.
